WELCOME TO THE
GO SHIN RYU JU-JITSU ACADEMY WEBSITE
OUR APPROACH
Most Martial Arts do not rely on brute strength but upon skill, finesse and/or pain compliance using minimum effort to achieve maximum effect. Applying this principle enables anyone, regardless of physique or stature, to control and release his or her energy to its greatest potential.
The Go Shin Ryu Ju-Jitsu academy teaches a free style form of self-defence combining several styles of Ju-Jitsu, Karate and Jeet Kune Do. The main thrust of the Go Shin Ryu style centres around seven basic Ju-Jitsu techniques; these can be easily used in any defensive situation. We also teach Self Protection concepts as well as physical blocking, striking and kicking techniques together with a wide range of defensive techniques that can be applied against single or multiple attackers.
The basic seven techniques start off with simple defences from grabbing attacks where little movement is required by the student to affect the technique. As students progress the defending techniques become more complex requiring increased movement and focus from the student to deal with the attack. We teach that defending yourself must be adapted according to the build of the one who is defending and to the situation they are in. NB: All techniques are valid in theory but in practice, real efficiency only comes from those techniques that are well known and applied in the right circumstances.
PROGRESSION WITHIN THE ACADEMY
Lessons are structured to ensure that as students pass up through the grades their technical skills increase mastering break falls, throwing, blocking and striking techniques. We also include: -
· Simulating situations where the incoming attack has connected necessitating the need to go to the ground quickly and safely continuing to defend against attacks whilst on the ground.
· Defending against edged weapon attacks where the prime focus must be on controlling the attacker’s weapon hand, avoid the attacker changing hands and disabling to prevent the risk of subsequent attack - adults only.
· Defending against an attacker where the student has a simulated injury.
Our grading syllabus consists of between twelve to sixteen belts depending upon age (Junior/Intermediate/Adult). Belts do not mean that any person is better than another, only that they have been training longer and have a little bit more knowledge than a lower grade. A student starts at white belt grade and with dedication, attending the majority of training sessions will progress through the belts at three months intervals achieve black belt within three years. Each syllabus (Junior/Intermediate/Adult) has been developed to enable the student to easily see what skills he/she will learn when progressing through the grades.
Gradings take place in the Dojo with the exception of Purple, Brown and Black Belt gradings which will be taken in private with external Instructor validation. These gradings take (2 hours plus) and are supported by volunteer attacker's (uke's). Grading costs range from £15 and progressively increase to £100 for Black Belt grading.
Juniors under the age of 18 years old will be taught the vast majority of the techniques with the exception of certain weapon and strangulation techniques. Students reaching 18 years old will be taught 'missed' techniques as required.
Using Your Skills
As a student becomes more knowledgeable in the martial art, he/she will also develop the ability to create and control pain without doing any real harm to an assailant. Combining this knowledge with the ability to block, strike, throw and create pain you can recognize the control and advantage a skilled student can have over an attacker.
The law states that you can use necessary force to defend yourself only doing what is necessary to stop the attack and get away. It is unusual for Martial Arts practitioners to find themselves in a situation where they need to call on their 'fighting' skills as training in Martial Arts instils a sense of awareness, confidence, and assertiveness which should guide the responsible student away from potential danger rather than into confrontation.
It is only in extreme circumstances that any of the moves a student learns should be used outside the training hall (Dojo) and must NOT be regarded as a ‘party piece' or used to fool around with friends. Because of the destructive potential of Martial Arts, we place a strong emphasis on the concept on NONVIOLENCE and stress that a physical confrontation should be avoided whenever possible. A physical confrontation indicates that all rational means (reason and intelligence) of resolving a problem have failed. It is not the first person to talk that starts an argument, it is the second. As the Ju-Jitsu student becomes confident of his/her skill it may mean that he/she will have a better than average chance of defending themselves. Go Shin Ryu Academy accepts no liability for any injury caused to yourself or others outside the Dojo.
We strive to promote a family atmosphere to training and teach students that Martial Art is not learning how to fight but learning how Not to fight.
